Description

Youngberry

Rubus ursinus

NOT TO TAS, WA

  • Similar to boysenberry
  • Sweet-tart purple-black fruit
  • Vigorous and high yielding

The youngberry is a hybrid of three different berry types; blackberry, raspberry, and dewberry. It was developed in 1905 by B.M. Young in Louisiana USA, and is similar to a boysenberry. The roundish berries are carreid on long canes. They ripen in summer and are ready to eat when they turn a deep purple-black colour. Berries have a sweet-tart flavour. Vigorous and high yielding. The sweet fruit can be eaten fresh or used in jams, pies, crumbles, drinks and preserves. Suitable for growing in all climates with a cold winter.

Youngberry plants produce fruit on two-year old canes (called floricanes). If they are grown in warmer climates, plants should be protected from the hot afternoon sun.

Berry canes are the roots and stems of the plant that are grown for a year then pruned to a single stem, dug up and sold bare-rooted (without soil). Canes will grow vigorously in the first year after planting.

A photo showing packaged berry canes. One bag has one blackberry cane and one bag has three raspberry canes. The canes are packaged in plastic bags and potting mix with a label with basic planting instructions.
