'Sea Buckthorn' seeds

Hippophae rhamnoides

NOT TO TAS, WA

  • Deciduous shrub to 250cm
  • Edible orange fruit in autumn and winter
  • Tolerates coastal conditions

A deciduous shrub to small tree growing to 250cm with thorny stems and branches and willow-like silver green leaves. Female plants have insignificant yellow flowers followed by edible orange fruit that stays on the branches through winter. The thin-skinned fruit has a sour taste and can be sweetened and used to make jams, jellies, sauces or tea, and can also be juiced. They are high in vitamins A, C and E. Plants are suitable to use as a hedge or in permaculture gardens as they fix nitrogen in the soil and provide shelter for birds. Tolerant of poor soil and coastal conditions. Best suited to cold climates.

Also known as 'Sea Berry', 'Siberian Pineapple' and 'Sha-ji'.
