Description
'Saltbush- Old Man' seeds
Altriplex nummularia
- Fast growing shrub to 3m
- Edible leaves can be used as a herb or leafy green
- Earthy, gently salty flavour
A fast growing perennnial shrub to 3m tall by 2-3m wide. The silvery grey leaves are 1-4cm long and irregularly rounded with a rough texture. Small cream to yellow flowers are followed by leafy bracts containing the seeds. The leaves and seed bracts are both edible and have an earthy and gently salty flavour. The leaves can be blanched or steamed and eaten as a leafy vegetable or used to wrap or stuff fish or meat. They can also be dried and used like a herb for flavour.
Plants can be grown in a bush food garden, as an informal hedge or windbreak, as habitat for small birds or as a fodder plant for livestock. An adaptable shrub that's tolerant of a range of soil types, drought, frost and salinity.
Native to inland semi-arid and arid regions of mainland Australia where it generally grows in saline, clay soils. Also known as 'Purngep', 'Pining' and 'Binga'.
Note: Seeds of many native plants are dormant and will not germinate until ideal environmental conditions are met. Follow instructions for pre-treatment and sowing, and be patient; some wild harvested seeds can take much longer to germinate than expected.
