Rose- Rugosa Scabrosa

Rosa rugosa hybrid

NOT TO TAS, WA

  • Large single magenta flowers
  • Lightly fragrant
  • Tolerant of salt spray and wind

A heritage rose with large, single, magenta flowers that have golden stamens and a light fragrance. Flowers are produced in small clusters and are followed by attractive bright orange-red hips. This Old Fashioned bush rose grows to 1.5m tall, has medium green, leathery, ribbed or crinkled leaves, and a dense, well-branched, spreading habit. It hybridises readily with other roses and its resistance to rose rust and black spot is valued by rose breeders. These characteristics also make it a relatively tough and trouble-free rose that is useful in landscape and garden designs. It flowers repeatedly throughout the season, can be mass planted, and is suitable for coastal gardens as it is very tolerant of salt spray and strong winds.

Heritage roses are rose varieties that are over 75 years old. They vary in flower type and growth habit, produce attractive hips after flowering, come in a wide range of colours and the majority of them have a strong fragrance.

A bare-rooted rose is one that has been field-grown, then dug up during its winter dormancy, pruned to a few stems and sold bare-rooted (without soil). Roses grown from bare-rooted stock generally take about two years to become established.
