Description

Rhubarb- Victoria (Crown)

Rhuem x hybridum

Synonyms: Rhuem rhabarbarum

NOT TO NT, TAS, WA

  • Perennial to 100cm
  • Long green stalks tinged with crimson
  • Very productive

A highly productive perennial growing to 100cm with long green stalks tinged with crimson. An older variety introduced in 1837 and named for Queen Victoria. Robust and very productive, low maintenance plants. The large stalks have a sweet flavour. Also known as 'Large Victorian' and 'Victorian Giant'.

The large green palmate leaves contain oxalic acid and should not be eaten by humans or animals. They can be used to make a garden insecticide.

A rhubarb crown is a rhizome (or underground runner) from a parent plant that establishes to form a new plant. The rhizome is then dug up and sold bare-rooted (without soil or leaves). Crowns come in all shapes and sizes and may have visible cuts on them where they were separated from the parent plant. Crowns will give you a head start when establishing a rhubarb plant compared to growing from seed.
