Description
'Native Ginger' seeds
Alpinia caerulea
Synonyms: Alpinia coerulea
- Edible shoots, fruit and rhizome
- Mild ginger flavour
- Suited to shade or part shade
A fast-growing edible perennial from the rainforest of northern NSW and Queensland, related to galangal. Clumps of deep green sword shaped leaves grow up to 2m tall from an underground rhizome. Fragrant white flowers in spring and summer are followed by 1.5cm round bright blue fruit, which are attractive to birds. New shoots have a mild ginger flavour and can be used in cooking, while the berries can also be eaten and taste tangy and lemony. Rhizomes are similar to ginger but with a milder flavour, and the mature leaves can be used to wrap fish for baking or steaming. Suits a shady or partly shady spot in a tropical to warm temperate climate; can also be grown indoors. Also known as 'Wild Ginger' or 'Blue Ginger'.
Note: Seeds of many native plants are dormant and will not germinate until ideal environmental conditions are met. Follow instructions for pre-treatment and sowing, and be patient; some wild harvested seeds can take much longer to germinate than expected.

Native Ginger
I planted 10 seeds last Sept in Adelaide and 4 germinated on a heated hot bed set at 25 degrees C, while one died in summer (my neglect) I now have three very healthy plants all 20cm tall growing in a large terra cotta pot in semi-shade. I know growing these in mediterranean Adelaide will be challenging but my garden is frost free.
