'Lemon Myrtle' seeds

Backhousia citriodora

  • Small tree or shrub
  • Use fragrant leaves fresh or dried
  • Fluffly white flowers attract bees

Evergreen tree growing to 10m in its native rainforest habitat of Southeast Queensland but much smaller in cooler climates or in a pot, where it will grow as a shrub to 1.5-2m. The lush green leaves grow to 10cm long and have a heavy lemon scent when crushed. New leaf growth is tinged with red. Fluffly clusters of white flowers appear in spring and summer and attract bees and butterflies. Grown commercially for its essential oil, leaves can be used fresh to make herbal tea or dried and powdered for use in baking. The tree makes a good hedge or screen in warm climates; in cooler climates it grows well in a large pot in a sunny but sheltered position.

*This species generally has a very low germination rate.

Note: Seeds of many native plants are dormant and will not germinate until ideal environmental conditions are met. Follow instructions for pre-treatment and sowing, and be patient; some wild harvested seeds can take much longer to germinate than expected.
