Description

'Gumbi Gumbi' seeds

Pittosporum angustifolium

Synonyms: Pittosporum phillyraeoides

  • Weeping evergreen tree to 4m
  • Used for medicinal tea
  • Can be grown in a large container

A weeping evergreen shrub or small tree growing to 4m with long, narrow green leaves. Small yellow to cream flowers in late winter to spring are followed by round inedible orange fruits, 1-2cm wide, which split open to reveal orange-red seeds. Growing up to 10m in the wild, in cultivation plants grow slowly to around 4m and are suited large containers, which further restrict their growth. Indigenous people used the leaves to make a medicinal tea to treat coughs and colds, skin irritation, and to induce lactation in nursing mothers. Tea can be made with fresh or dried leaves using one or two leaves per cup. Attracts birds and pollinators.

Native to inland areas of Australia from Western Australian to Queensland. Frost and drought tolerant once established. Also known as 'Native Apricot', 'Gumby Gumby', 'Western Pittosporum', 'Weeping Pittosporum', 'Berrigen', 'Bitter Bush', 'Cattle Bush', 'Cheesewood' and 'Native Willow'.

Note: Seeds of many native plants are dormant and will not germinate until ideal environmental conditions are met. Follow instructions for pre-treatment and sowing, and be patient; some wild harvested seeds can take much longer to germinate than expected.
