A strong-growing, cold-hardy variety with nearly thornless canes growing approximately 1-1.5m x 1-1.5m. The pink flowers are self-fertile and produce yellow/green berries that ripen to sweet-tart red fruit from early to mid-summer. The ripe red berries are delicious eaten fresh or in desserts, while the slightly unripe pink fruit can be cooked and made into jam, pie fillings or sauces.
This variety is a cross introduced in 1949 that captures the best traits of both European and American gooseberries. It is still the most popular variety today. Plants are moderately vigorous and are resistant to mildew. Plants have an upright habit and form a small bush but will benefit from some support especially when it is fruiting. Young branches may have a few thorns but are usually gone by the time fruit is ready to harvest. Once established, plants usually crop abundantly for many years.
Gooseberries can be grown as a bush, or in pots, and can be trained against a wall making them ideal for smaller spaces.
