Description

'Climbing Bean- Madagascar' seeds

Phaseolus limensis

Synonyms: Phaseolus lunatas

  • Perennial climbing bean
  • Large white seeds speckled with maroon
  • Also known as 'Tropical lima bean'

A vigorous climbing lima bean native to Peru, perennial in warm climates (usually grown as an annual in cold climates) and growing to 2m on a trellis. Plants have broad green leaves in clusters of three and produce small pods each containing 1-3 large seeds. The seeds are white when fresh and marked with decorative brown to maroon speckles when dried. Young pods can be steamed, though they are fibrous, and fresh seeds can be peeled and eaten raw or steamed in a similar way to broad beans. Mature seeds harvested when the pods are dry can be stored then soaked overnight and added to soups and casseroles. They can also be used to make tempeh.

Suited to hot, humid climates where vines will die back in winter. Vines become more productive over time. Also known as 'Tropical Lima Bean', 'Seven Year Lima Bean' and 'Christmas Lima'.
