Description
'Banksia- Hooker's' seeds
Banksia hookeriana
- Perennial shrub to 2-3m high and wide
- Orange to gold flowers emerge from soft white buds
- Attracts birds
An evergreen perennial growing as a rounded shrub 2-3m high and wide. Plants have flat grey-green leaves with serrated edges, each 10-15cm long and 1cm wide. The cylindrical flower spikes are coverd in soft white to pale pink buds that open from the bottom up to reveal burnt orange to gold flowers. The flower spikes are around 10cm long, long lasting, and appear mainly in winter.
An ornamental shrub suited to the back of a native border, as an informal hedge or windbreak. The flowers are nectar rich and attract birds; indigenous people soaked the flower spikes in water to make a sweet drink. Also makes an excellent cut flower lasting around 10 days in a vase.
Originating in the Geraldton and Swan plains in Western Australia, plants require very well drained soil and are drought tolerant and tolerant of coastal conditions. Plants tolerate light frosts once established.
This species is also known as 'Eneabba Banksia' and 'Acorn Banksia' (note: Banksia priornotes is also known as 'Acorn Banksia').
Note: Seeds of many native plants are dormant and will not germinate until ideal environmental conditions are met. Follow instructions for pre-treatment and sowing, and be patient; some wild harvested seeds can take much longer to germinate than expected.
