Pansy- Swiss Giants Rhinegold

With the advice that pansies require darkness for germination, after sowing in a seedling tray, I covered the tray with aluminium foil for the first seven days. I then checked daily for signs of germination. I removed the foil as the first seed emerged (day 9). Seedlings were planted out in November and they've been flowering gloriously through January. I love the way each flower starts its day pointing east and then tracks the sun and ends the day facing west. A delightful flower.

Five Stars

This year was the first year my property has had gardens. I bought a truck load of soil from a bloke but I think he picked up road soil that had been weed treated or something and he just mixed it with a bit of tree bark/mulch. Anyway the soil part of it was yellow clay sort of stuff and I'm sure it killed things. I put a lot of these pansies in but got very few plants. I must say though, the plants that did come up were stunning and loaded with gorgeous big yellow and black pansies and actually seem quite hardy. Just as a matter of interest, I also bought a few packets of expensive red and black pansy seeds from the US - I didn't get a single one come up. I have improved the soil a lot (removed a lot of that garbage I got a truckload of) and put tonnes of sheep manure in. So I'm getting some more of these seeds and see how I go in the coming season. They're just beautiful so here's hoping.
