I have an update from my December 2022 review. I encountered 2 issues, that I would like to share in case others find the same. Issue 1: As the Cauliflower and Cabbages grew the decoys became hidden in the foliage, because the decoys were too short. This was resolved by pushing 20mm PVC pipe, filled with dirt into the ground and inserting the decoys into the pipe thereby raising them. I found 15cm pipe lengths were sufficient. PVC pipe is cheap ($9 for 3 metres gives you 20 elevators to use) Issue 2: I didn't deploy enough decoys, and as the plants grew bigger the decoys appeared less dominant and the moths returned. This was easily resolved by purchasing more decoys. All of this is an investment because at the supermarket cabbages are currently $7 and cauliflowers are $5, and these solutions work for future crops as well. When combined with dipel spray, I have a bumper crop that's free of caterpillars.

Cabbage Moth Decoys

I have always avoided growing Cauliflowers and Cabbages because of the Cabbage moth problem and my aversion to chemical deterrents. I am now able to successfully grow them with the cabbage moth decoys. Since I purchased the decoys, I have had no cabbage moths at all. I accept that in high winds the wings are destroyed. I merely replace them, and have found that the small cost of replacing them, is worth it because of the alternative is to pay for the expensive, low-quality supermarket product

Cabbage Moth Decoys

These are a good idea but waste of money. Mine all had the imitation moth destroyed by wind. Still picking up plastic wings from around the garden. Very disappointed :-(

Cabbage Moth Decoys

They’re so flimsy, almost all have had their wings break off in the wind/rain.

I am amazed at how well these have worked. We have 12 of these dotted around the yard. A cabbage moth will fly in, do a loop around the yard, and then over the fence to the next yard. We have yet to see one land on a plant since we put these decoys in. Last year they damaged our leafy greens, brocolli and even geraniums. So far this year, there is no damage whatsoever. Admittedly it is only the start of spring now but judging by what we have observed in the moth behaviours, things are looking good!
